PLAYER TO WATCH Rhyjon Blackwell has made an immediate impact in his first season at Marist. Blackwell’s explosive scoring ability became evident in his first game as a Red Fox. At Big East foe Xavier, he led all scorers with 24 points, which included 18 in a span of under 14 minutes in the second half. Blackwell has ranked among the team’s leaders in scoring and three-pointers made all season while establishing himself as one of the nation’s top throw shooters. Through Feb. 19, he has consecutive made free throw streaks of 24, 17, and 13 this season. Blackwell began his collegiate career at Florida Southwestern. He also played at McNeese State and USC-Aiken prior to Marist. He is the author of The Art of Becoming: The Most Dangerous PG, and his father, Kory, is a former NFL defensive back. NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984-88 and led the Red Foxes to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. He was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers and played his entire career with the organization. Smits appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his professional career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots.
