PLAYER TO WATCH Building off an outstanding freshman season, sophomore guard Josh Pascarelli has become one of the top players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Pascarelli earned First Team Preseason All-MAAC honors this season. In November, he was named to the Watch List for the prestigious Lou Henson Award. Pascarelli has ranked among the conference’s leaders in scoring, three-point percentage, three pointers per game, and field-goal percentage all season. He topped 20 points in each of Marist’s first three games this season, becoming the first Red Fox to accomplish this feat since Khallid Hart in 2015-16. On Feb. 21 against Canisius, he scored 31 points as he topped 30 for the first time in his career. Pascarelli was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team last season. He ranked in the conference’s top 10 in three-pointers per game and three-point percentage. NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984-88 and led the Red Foxes to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. Smits was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers and played his entire career with the organization. He appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his professional career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots. Rik remains a frequent visitor to the Marist campus, and his number 45 is retired at McCann Arena.

HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNE John Dunne, who has raised the profile of the Marist men’s basketball program throughout his tenure, is in his seventh season leading the Red Foxes. This season, Marist started 6-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play for the first time in the Red Foxes’ 28 years in the conference. Marist’s nine-game winning streak in December and January was the program’s longest in 18 years. Last season, Marist earned the third seed in the MAAC championship and won 18 games. The seed was the Red Foxes’ best in 17 years, and the win total was the program’s best in 16 years. Dunne guided Marist to the 2023 MAAC championship final for the first time in program history. Dunne served as head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2006-18. He led the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship and 2017 CIT championship. Dunne served as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee in the 2012-13 season, and was a member of the committee from 2010-13. He is a four-time national finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award (2011, 2021, 2024, 2025).
