PLAYER TO WATCH Rookie sensation Will Sydnor has taken the league by storm with stellar offensive play this season. As of late January, the freshman from the Bronx has already won three MAAC Rookie of the Week awards which leads the conference and is the Jaspers’ leading scorer at 15.1 points-per-game. Sydnor had a memorable breakthrough performance of 24 points and 5 rebounds when Manhattan beat Fordham in this year’s Battle of the Bronx. The 24-point output versus the Rams was the highest from a Jasper player since Rich Williams scored 24 points against Fordham back in 2015. Sydnor has continued on an upward trajectory since then, posting a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds vs. Mount on January 10. His five threes in the contest was a career high as of late January. NOTABLE ALUMNI John "Jack" Powers is a name that has been synonymous with New York City college basketball since the late 1950's. In his three years on the court for Manhattan, he twice led the Jaspers to the NCAA tournament and the NIT. In 2012, Powers was recognized at the First Annual MAAC Honor Roll Dinner and at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was enshrined in "The MAAC Experience," the league's exhibit. On February 26, 2016, Powers became the first Jasper to have his uniform number retired. His #34 was raised to the rafters on 'Jack Powers Night 'at halftime of the Manhattan vs. Iona game at Draddy Gymnasium. Powers passed away on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.

HEAD COACH JOHN GALLAGHER John Gallagher is in his second season at the helm of the Manhattan men's basketball program for the 2024-25 season. On March 29, 2023, Gallagher was named the 24 th head coach in the history of the Manhattan University men’s basketball program. Gallagher has 24 years of collegiate coaching experience on the Division I level. Before accepting the head coaching job at Manhattan, he served as head coach for the University of Hartford men’s basketball program for 12 seasons through the program’s penultimate season in Division I (2021-2022). During his time in West Hartford, Gallagher took the Hawks program to three postseason appearances highlighted by Hartford’s at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament in 2021 after beating UMass Lowell in the America East Championship Game. Hartford matched up with Baylor, the eventual national champions, in a first-round match-up between the No.16-seeded Hawks and the No.1-seeded Bears. Additionally, Gallagher led Hartford to its highest winning percentage (.625) that season. Gallagher earned his bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s University in 1999. He played on the Hawks men’s basketball team from 1996-1999 under the program’s all-time winningest coach Phil Martelli. During the 1996-97 season, Saint Joe’s went 26-7 and advanced to the Sweet 16 before losing to Kentucky.
