PLAYER TO WATCH Graduate CJ Anthony has made an impact in his first season with the Gaels as the team’s top scorer and playmaker. He has been ranked among the Top 5 players in the MAAC all-season on KenPom.com and quickly established himself as a veteran leader on a squad with 12 first-year scholarship players at Iona. The 6-0 guard and Columbus, Ohio native came to New Rochelle after four seasons at the University of Cincinnati where he was a walk-on for Wes Miller’s Bobcats. Anthony quickly emerged as a standout for the Maroon & Gold scoring 24 points against Hofstra in the 2025-26 season opener and eclipsing his career point total at Cincinnati in his second game play. He has been among the MAAC’s leader in assists and assist to turnover ratio and consistently on multiple stat leaderboards throughout the season. NOTABLE ALUMNI Richie Guerin was one of the most influential players in Iona basketball history, starring for the Gaels from 1951-54 and graduating as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,375 points and a career average near 19.6 PPG. At Iona he earned two all-metropolitan honors and set a school record with a 40-point game in 1954. His impact extended far beyond college: drafted by the New York Knicks, he became a six-time NBA All-Star and elite guard of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Guerin's remarkable career later earned him induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, making him one of the most celebrated Gaels ever.
