PLAYER TO WATCH Senior guard Judith Gomez has started every game in each of the last three seasons for the Iona University women’s basketball team. The Barcelona, Spain native has set new career-highs this season in scoring and three-point field goal percentage. Gomez has also been the team leader in steals per game for the second straight season. In 2024-25, Gomez ranks among the top three-point shooters in the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage and made three-point field goals per game. She set a new career-high in scoring with 20 points in a win over Siena back on January 4, 2025. Gomez earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing degree in May of 2024 from Iona’s LaPenta School of Business and is currently pursuing her Master of Business Administration. NOTABLE ALUMNI Juana Camilion ’22, ’23 MA became Iona’s first Olympic medalist this past August, earning a silver medal for her home country of Spain in 3x3 Basketball at the XXXIII Olympiad. Spain earned a two-seed after pool play and advanced to the gold medal game with a 18-16 win over USA. Camilion led her team with game-high six points in the one-point loss to Germany to earn the silver medal in the first Olympic competition for the sport. One of the all-time Iona greats, Camilion earned five All-MAAC honors in her career including 2023 Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors on the way to capturing the 2023 MAAC Championship title. She is currently playing her second season of professional basketball, starting at shooting guard for Estudiantes Madrid as part of Liga Femenina Endesa, the top league in Spain.

HEAD COACH ANGELIKA SZUMILO Angelika Szumilo enters her second season at the helm of the Iona University women’s basketball program in 2024-25. Szumilo joined the Maroon & Gold after a successful four-year tenure as the head coach of Fairleigh Dickinson. In her last two years at FDU, Szumilo captured back-to-back Northeast Conference regular season championships and Coach of the Year honors along with two trips to the WNIT. Her 2021-22 team recorded 19 conference victories to capture the first league title for the program since 1992-93. In 2022-23, FDU captured back-to-back league championships for the first time in program history and posted a program record 22 regular season wins. Szumilo joined the Knights after a nine-year tenure as the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Fordham, helping guide the Rams to seven 20-win seasons, two Atlantic 10 Championships and NCAA berths along with four trips to the WNIT. She was a standout point guard for the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, leading the team to the 2001 NEC title and was named Scholar Athlete of the Year before graduating in 2003.
