PLAYER TO WATCH Juana Camilion, a three-time All-MAAC honoree, has been a key cog for the Gaels’ success on both ends of the floor since joining the program in 2018-19. The senior guard fromPalma de Mallorca, Spain eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in her career earlier this season, becoming the 28 th Gael in program history to join the 1,000-point club. In four career MAAC Championship games, Camilion has averaged 13.0 points per game. One of the best performances of her career came in 2019, a 26-point effort that helped Iona upset seventh-seeded Siena in the opening round of the 2018–19 MAAC Championship. NOTABLE ALUMNI Maggie Timoney ’89, ’92 MBA was a four-year standout for the Maroon & Gold. She ranks third on Iona’s all-time scoring list with 1,894 career points. Timoney ranks in the top five in categories including field goals made, three-point field goal percentage, free throw attempts and made, and games played. As a freshman, Timoney was named the 1986 MAAC Rookie of the Year. After graduation, Timoney served for two years as a graduate assistant coach with Iona from 1989–91. She is currently the CEO for Heineken Ireland, the first female ever to hold the prestigious position with the company. She also serves as a Board of Trustee member for Iona College.

NOTABLE ALUMNI One of the finest all-around players to ever wear the Iona uniform, Jeff Ruland was instrumental in putting the Gaels’ basketball program on the national map. In his three seasons at Iona, Ruland was a dominant force, bursting onto the scene to lead the Gaels and the nation’s freshmen in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. The dominance continued as the 6-10 center led Iona to a three-year record of 69-21 (.767) and the Gaels’ first two NCAA Tournament appearances. The two-time All-America (1979 and 1980) went on to be a second-round selection (25 th overall) in the 1981 NBA draft.

HEAD COACH RICK PITINO Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Pitino is in his second season at the helmof the Iona Collegemen’s basketball programand 34 th as an NCAA Division I head coach. Rick Pitino has taken four different programs to the NCAA tournament and coached two national championship teams. During his first 33 seasons as a Division I head coach, He held a 782-277 overall record and a 54-20 record in the NCAA Tournament. During the 2021–22 campaign, Coach Pitino earned his 800th collegiatewin. In his first year at Iona, Coach Pitino earned his 13 th conference tournament championship as a Division I head coach and became the only coach in NCAA Div. I history towin tournaments in six difference conferences (ECACNorth, SEC, Conference USA, BigEast,AmericanandMAAC).CoachPitinobecamethefirstcoach totakethreedifferentschoolstotheNCAA Final Four and first coach towin an NCAA Championship at two different schools. He holds the third highest winning percentage in NCAA Tournament games (.729) among all active coaches. Coach Pitino, who has a stellar reputation for success on the court and a dedication to student-athlete academic success, has served as head coach of the University of Louisville (2001–2017, winning the 2013 NCAA Championship), University of Kentucky (1989–1997, winning the 1996 NCAA Championship), Providence College (1985–1987), Boston University (1978–1983) and Hawaii (last six games 1975–1976). And, while often choosing to do so anonymously, he has served as a charitable benefactor for a broad spectrum of worthy causes.

HEAD COACH BILLI CHAMBERS Iona College women’s basketball head coach Billi Chambers is in the midst of her ninth season at the helm of the program in 2021–22. Chambers, a one-time MAAC Coach of the Year, guided the Maroon & Gold to the first MAAC Championship in the program’s history in 2016. The Gaels have boasted an All-MAAC honoree in all eight years under Chambers’ tutelage, including two MAAC Player of the Year awards (Damika Martinez ’14, ’15). Juana Camilion is a three-time member of postseason all-conference teams, earning All-MAAC Third Team honors last season. Chambers and the Gaels look to return to glory in a wide-open field of 11 teams down in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
