PLAYER TO WATCH Red-shirt senior center Jordan Jones has emerged into a leader on and off the floor for the Marist men’s basketball team, and has become of the top interior players in the MAAC. The Baltimore native played his first two seasons at Charleston Southern, and transferred to Marist in the summer of 2018. He became a fixture in the Red Foxes’ starting lineup in the 2019–20 season, and his production has grown in 2020–21. Jones is one of the conference’s top shot blockers, and has become an efficient scorer in the post who can do damage with either hand. In an eight-game stretch from mid-De- cember through mid-January of this season, Jones shot 80 percent from the field while averaging over 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots. NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984–88, and led the Red Foxes to the NCAA Tournament in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. Smits was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers, and played his entire career with the organization. He appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots.

In the 2020–21 season, Dunne guided the Red Foxes to a 6-1 start, the program’s best mark after seven games in 22 years. On Jan. 8, 2020, Dunne became the fourth head coach in MAAC history to win 100 regular season conference games. In his first two seasons, Marist had its first MAAC Sixth Man of the Year, a Third Team All-MAAC selection, a MAAC All-Rookie Team choice, and nine selections to the conference’s All-Academic Team. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Dunne served as head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2006–18. He guided the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship and 2017 CIT championship. Dunne served as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee in the 2012–13 season, and was a member of the committee from 2010–13. He was a 2011 national finalist for the Skip Prosser Award.
