MOUNT ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY
Mount St. Mary's University
Mount St. Mary’s University, founded in 1808 by Rev. John Dubois, is a mission-driven institution that cultivates the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—preparing students to lead lives of significance. Rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition and open to all, the Mount challenges students to think deeply, act ethically, and discover how their gifts can shape the world. At the Mount, students find the intersection of their talents, passions, and purpose. They are encouraged to explore what matters most, both to them and to society, so they can build meaningful careers and lives formed by their values. The Mount is a private, Catholic liberal arts university set on 1,400 acres at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains in Emmitsburg, Maryland, offering a rare combination of natural beauty, spiritual serenity, and academic rigor. Dedicated to learning in the pursuit of truth, Mount St. Mary’s embraces its role in the Catholic Church’s mission while welcoming students of any faith or background. The university affirms the dignity of every person and seeks to foster just, compassionate engagement with the world. The campus itself—defined by historic architecture, sweeping mountain views, and an active, close-knit student life— serves as both sanctuary and source of inspiration. The Mount enrolls more than 2,000 full-time students across five academic divisions and offers over 90 majors, minors, and special
programs in four undergraduate schools, along with more than 20 graduate and adult undergraduate programs, including advanced offerings through the Timothy E. Trainor School of Health Professions. Students are immersed in a rigorous academic environment marked by small class sizes and a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio, where mentorship and intellectual challenge go hand in hand. Beyond the classroom, Mount students engage in leadership, service, spiritual formation, Division I athletics, and experiential learning opportunities that prepare them for life after graduation. At the Mount, 95 percent of graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months. Recognized among the top 10 percent of colleges and universities nationwide for long-term earnings, the Mount delivers strong return on investment by pairing academic excellence with career preparation and lifelong support. The Career Center continues to guide Mount alumni as they grow professionally and lead with purpose. The university is also home to Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, the second oldest and largest seminary in the United States, and the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Located above campus, the Grotto welcomes more than 400,000 visitors each year and stands as a powerful symbol of reflection, faith, and the enduring spirit of the Mount.
