Fairfield University, founded by the Society of Jesus in 1942, is a coeducational institution of higher learning whose primary objectives are to develop the creative intellectual potential of its students and to foster in them ethical and religious values and a sense of social responsibility. Jesuit education, which began in 1547, is committed today to the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement. Located on 200 acres overlooking Long Island Sound, the University has grown from an initial class of 303 undergraduate male students admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences in 1947, into a coeducational university with more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Along the way, the University has awarded more than 45,000 degrees since 1951, and has developed a reputation for educational excellence both regionally and nationally. Fairfield students benefit from the resources and reputation of a school, which was ranked as the number three school in the Northern Region in 2021 No. 132 (T) overall in the National Universities category by in the 2025 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges Rankings, with nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of disciplines including.: No. 127 Best Undergraduate Business Programs; No. 96 Best Undergraduate Nursing; and No. 78 Best Undergraduate Engineering. TThe University was also ranked No. 45 for Best Undergraduate Teaching, nationally. According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 ranking, Fairfield was No. 65 (T) among Private National Universities, following its elevation to National Professional Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Fairfield he University offers 46 over 50 undergraduate majors and minors, and a variety of Master’s and certificate programs in five different schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Charles F. Dolan School of

Business, the School of Education and Human Development, the School of Engineering and Computing, and the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies. According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 ranking, In 2022, Fairfield University moved into the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education’s Doctoral Universities category and entered the Best National Universities ranking for the first time, placing among U.S News & World Report’s “Top 125 Best National Universities.” Fairfield was was No. 65 (T) among Private National Universities, following its elevation to National Professional Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.the top-ranked institution among schools that moved into the National Universities category, placing at #115. Among private institutions in the National Universities category, Fairfield placed in the Top 75.
