COMMISSIONER'S CUP

Commissioner’s Cup Fairfield University and Rider University have been announced as the winners of the 2023-24 Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Commissioner’s Cup, announced by the league office today. The Fairfield Stags secured the Overall Commissioner’s Cup and the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup, while the Rider Broncs captured the Men’s Commissioner’s. “I would like to congratulate the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at Fairfield and Rider for winning the 2023-24 Richard J. Ensor, Esq. Commissioner’s Cup,” said Travis Tellitocci, MAAC Commissioner. “This award recognizes overall athletics excellence in the conference and is a testament to the great success that was achieved over the past season by each school.” Fairfield claimed its first overall cup in over a decade, last winning in 2011-12 and the program’s fifth total overall cup trophy since 1994-95. The Stags clinched their third consecutive women’s cup and fourth over the past five season. The 2023 24 women’s cup was the program’s 12th – the most among current MAAC members – breaking their tie with Marist. In total, Fairfield owns 20 MAAC Commissioner’s Cups to date, having also won three men’s cups previously. The 20 total all-time cups rank second in the MAAC to only Marist (30). This season, Fairfield swept MAAC Championships and MAAC Regular Season titles in women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and women’s tennis, while also claiming regular season crowns in men’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, and baseball. The Stags also made the championship title contests in women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, and baseball, and additionally finished as the runner-up in women’s swimming and diving, men’s golf and women’s golf. On a national stage, the Stags had an unprecedented year, with both the women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse teams earning national

rankings. The women’s hoops team saw their first-ever ranking in the AP Top-25, the first for a MAAC program in over a decade, slotting the No. 25 spot in March before ending the season as a receiving votes team. The women’s lacrosse team was ranked for the final nine weeks of the season, peaking at No. 22 and ending the season at No. 23, while becoming the first MAAC team in league history to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Rider was crowned as the men’s champion for just the second time in program history, having won its previous cup during the 1997-98 campaign. In total, the Broncs have won three MAAC Commissioner’s Cups, additionally winning one overall cup following the 2019-20 season. Rider captured MAAC Championships in men’s sports during all three championship seasons in 2023-24 beginning with men’s soccer in the fall. In the winter, the Broncs won their second-straight indoor track and field title, and repeated the feat in the spring, taking home the outdoor track and field crown for the second consecutive year as well. Moreover, Rider had third-place championship finishes at swimming and diving, and at golf. The Richard J. Ensor, Esq. MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 23 championships conducted within the MAAC. Only the scores from Men’s & Women’s Basketball, plus the top six men’s and top six women’s scores are used to determine an institution’s total points. On May 1, 2023, the MAAC Council of Presidents approved the renaming of the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup after retired MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor, Esq., in honor of his legacy and exemplary service to intercollegiate athletics.
