PLAYER TO WATCH Zaria Shazer has been a constant for the Red Foxes, averaging 14.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Shazer leads the MAAC and ranks among the nation’s best at 37.4 minutes per game. She’s totaled ten double-doubles this season and scored a career-high 29 points in a win over Lafayette on Nov. 15. NOTABLE ALUMNI Julianne Viani-Braen is one of Marist’s most celebrated women’s basketball players. Viani Braen was a starter for the Red Foxes when they became the MAAC’s first women’s basketball team to reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007. She scored 1,447 points in her collegiate career from 2005-09, and is one of the top three-point shooters in program history. Viani-Braen is now a sportscaster who has covered games on ESPN, CBS, Big Ten Network, Pac-12 Network, NBA NextVR, MSG, and YES. She was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll in the 2013–14 season.

PLAYER TO WATCH Sophomore center Max Allen II has established himself as a leader on the floor in his first season with the Red Foxes. Allen played his freshman year at San Jose State, and transferred to Marist following the 2022-23 season. He has quickly become of the top low-post players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Allen scored in double figures in each of his first four games as a Red Fox, which included a 28-point outburst at New Hampshire on Nov. 21. He notched his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Quinnipiac on Jan. 11. Possessing great footwork and terrific touch around the basket, Allen has consistently ranked among the conference’s leaders in field goal percentage all season long. NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984-88 and led the Red Foxes to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. Smits was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers and played his entire career with the organization. He appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots. Rik remains a frequent visitor to the Marist campus, and his number 45 is retired at McCann Arena.

HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNE John Dunne is in his sixth season as head coach at Marist. He was hired as the 12 th head coach in program history on April 3, 2018. In the 2022-23 season, Dunne guided Marist to the MAAC championship final for the first time in program history. He became the second coach in conference history to lead two schools to the final. Dunne holds the MAAC record for most victories in the championship by a lower-seeded team with eight. Dunne earned his 200th career victory on Nov. 26, 2022 at Bucknell. He ranks second in conference history in number of victories in MAAC regular-season play. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Dunne served as head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2006-18. He guided the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship and 2017 CIT championship. Dunne served as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee in the 2012-13 season, and was a member of the committee from 2010-13. He was a 2011 and 2021 national finalist for the Skip Prosser Award.

HEAD COACH ERIN DOUGHTY Erin Doughty enters her first season as head coach of the women’s basketball team in the 2023-24 season. This season is her 22 nd year of association with the Marist women’s basketball program, which previously includes time as a student-athlete, student assistant coach, assistant coach, associate head coach, and now head coach. Coach Doughty has been part of all of Marist’s 11 MAAC Tournament Championships, winning one as a player, nine as an assistant coach, and one as an associate head coach.
