Canisius University

At Canisius University, leadership isn’t about status or a title – it’s a way of living. Located on a 72-acre campus in the heart of Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius is a supportive community of people from all walks of life, engaged in conscientious academic, personal and spiritual inquiry. Golden Griffins learn how to think more deeply, create more boldly, dare more courageously and live more compassionately, developing the skills and confidence to take the lead in their chosen field, career and community. Canisius takes the best in every student – and make it that much greater. Canisius believes that greatness is in everyone, and as each individual flourishes, the world benefits. The school’s rigorous curriculum, vibrant and inclusive campus environment and professional and community connections create a transformative educational experience that goes deeper than imparting necessary skills and knowledge. Griffs know how to think and how to lead, making them not only well positioned to succeed in an ever-changing job market but also well equipped to change the world. What We Stand For • We are sensitive to the challenges that the world faces. As a university, we have the power to address injustice by expanding access to our transformative education, advancing equity, and producing new knowledge that advances humanity. And when our students graduate, they go on to meaningfully impact the areas that call out to them. • Our community is respectful, creative and tightly knit. Here, we cherish and challenge the individual, making space and providing support for everyone to discover their passions, articulate their purpose and become the greatest version of themselves. • We are determined to make a difference. We understand that doing things the way that they have always been done only perpetuates the status quo, and that there is no progress without action. Motivated by a vision of what could and should be, we move forward fearlessly. • We see and respect every individual as a whole person. Every Griff, whether they’re a faculty member, staff person or a student, plays a role in every other Griffs’ development. When we lift each other up, we all reach even greater heights. Founded in 1870 by German Jesuits, Canisius is named for St. Peter Canisius, a renowned Dutch educator and one of the original members of the Society of Jesus. One of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Canisius is proud to share in the Jesuit heritage, which offers students a unique blend of academic, social and spiritual growth opportunities to prepare them to be leaders in their professions, communities and service to humanity. Just minutes from downtown Buffalo, Canisius is the largest private university in Western New York, and consistently ranks among the top regional colleges in the northeast.

Canisius enrolls approximately 4,000 students a year with a student body that is 45 percent male and 55 percent female. With a student/ faculty ratio of 11:1, Canisius students have the opportunity to work directly with their instructors. There are 230 full-time faculty at Canisius, of which 94 percent hold a PhD, or other terminal degree. There are more than 100 majors, minor and degree programs offered through Canisius’ three accredited schools and colleges. The school’s athletic department, which proudly sponsors 20 programs at the NCAA Division I level, is made up of nearly 415 student-athletes, and there are more than 60 student-run clubs and organizations on campus. On April 27, 2023, Canisius, under the leadership of President Steve K. Stoute, announced that it had successfully petitioned the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Board of Regents for university designation.
