PLAYER TO WATCH Junior forward Zaria Shazer is a key contributor in multiple facets of the game. She has been Marist's leading scorer and rebounder for much of the season, while also ranking among the team leaders in assists, steals, blocked shots, and minutes played. Shazer was a key component of Marist's 2021 MAAC championship team. She is a two-year starter and two-year Academic All District selection. NOTABLE ALUMNI Julianne Viani-Braen is one of Marist’s most celebrated women’s basketball players. Viani Braen was a starter for the Red Foxes when they became the MAAC’s first women’s basketball team to reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007. She scored 1,447 points in her collegiate career from 2005-09, and is one of the top three-point shooters in program history. Viani-Braen is now a sportscaster who has covered games on ESPN, CBS, Big Ten Network, Pac-12 Network, NBA NextVR, MSG, and YES. She was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll in the 2013–14 season.

PLAYER TO WATCH Patrick Gardner is in his first season with the Red Foxes in 2022-23 and has certainly made his presence felt. Gardner began his collegiate career at Nassau Community College. He then spent two years at Saint Michael’s prior to his arrival at Marist. This season, Gardner has ranked among the top scorers and rebounders in the MAAC all season long. He was named Most Valuable Player of the London Showcase after totaling 27 points, nine rebounds, and two blocked shots in a victory over Maine on Dec. 4. Gardner helped the Red Foxes earn their first sweep of the Canisius/Niagara trip in eight years. After averaging 28.5 points in the two games, which included a 31-point effort and game-winning shot with 6.8 seconds left at Niagara, Gardner was named MAAC Player of the Week on Jan. 16. Patrick Gardner is in his first season at Marist in 2022-23. After previously starring at Nassau Community College and Saint Michael's, he scored his 2,000th collegiate point on Feb. 19 NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984-88 and led the Red Foxes to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. Smits was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers and played his entire career with the organization. He appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots.

HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNE John Dunne is in his fifth season as head coach at Marist. Dunne was hired as the 12th head coach in program history on April 3, 2018. In Dunne’s first four seasons at Marist, the Red Foxes had a Rookie of the Year, their first MAAC Sixth Man of the Year, a second Team All-MAAC honoree, two Third Team All-MAAC selections, four MAAC All-Rookie Team choices, and 15 selections to the conference’s All-Academic Team. Dunne earned his 200th career victory on Nov. 26, 2022 at Bucknell. He picked up his 50 th victory at Marist on Jan. 8, 2023 against Mount St. Mary’s. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Dunne served as head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2006-18. He guided the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship and 2017 CIT championship. Dunne served as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee in the 2012-13 season, and was a member of the committee from 2010-13. He was a 2011 and 2021 national finalist for the Skip Prosser Award.
HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGIS Brian Giorgis is in his 21 st and final season as a head coach of Marist Women’s Basketball. Associate head coach Erin Doughty has been named Giorgis' successor, and will take over as head coach on April 1, 2023. During his time as the Red Foxes’ leader, Giorgis has won a conference-record 11 MAAC Championships and eight MAAC Coach of the Year awards. The 2020 recipient of the CollegeInsider.com Kay Yow National Coach of the Year honor, Giorgis followed up that season with a return to glory, capturing the program’s 11 th MAAC Championship. On February 17, 2022, Giorgis won his 450 th game as Marist’s head coach, becoming what is believed to be the first head coach with 450 coaching wins at both the NCAA Division I level and high school level. In 2006-07, Giorgis led Marist to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first MAAC program, men’s or women’s, to achieve that feat. Outside of Marist, Giorgis won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2013 World University Games as an assistant coach. He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
