Canisius College

Founded in 1870 by German Jesuits, Canisius College is named for St. Peter Canisius, a renowned Dutch educator and one of the original members of the Society of Jesus. One of 27 Jesuit colleges in the nation, Canisius is proud to share in the Jesuit heritage, which offers students a unique blend of academic, social and spiritual growth opportunities to prepare them to be leaders in their professions, communities and service to humanity. Located in a residential neighborhood in North-Central Buffalo, Canisius is the largest private university in Western New York, and consistently ranks among the top regional colleges in the northeast. Minutes from downtown Buffalo, the Metro Rail rapid transit system connects the college directly to the city’s waterfront, downtown theatre district and some of Buffalo’s most exciting sports arenas. Canisius enrolls approximately 4,000 students a year with a student body that is 45 percent male and 55 percent female. All undergraduates take core curriculum courses that are designed to provide written and oral communication skills and develop critical thinking. With a student/faculty ratio of 11:1, students have the opportunity to work closely with their instructors, often publishing or presenting scholarly articles based on joint research. There are 230 full-time faculty at Canisius, of whom 94 percent hold a PhD or other terminal degree. There are more than 1,000 courses and 70 distinct majors, minors and special programs offered at Canisius in three academic divisions. Majors for today’s world include Animal Behavior, Ecology & Conservation; Bioinformatics; Catholic Studies; International Business; Digital Media; Studio Art and online graduate programs in Physical Education, Sport Administration and School Building Leader (SBL)/School District Leader (SDL) Certification. More than 100 college-sponsored organizations offer Canisius students experiences related to the media, student government, academics, and religious and social interests. The Jesuit spirit of “men and women for others” is realized each and every day through the Canisius College Service-Learning Program. Service-learning combines academics with community service to enhance academic performance, develop leadership skills and promote social justice in the community. Hundreds of courses at Canisius incorporate a service-learning component to provide valuable lessons about the importance of service to society, while helping those in need of extra assistance. Canisius students also serve the community through the college’s Campus Ministry service program, which matches students who wish to serve with the college’s partners in the community who need help. When the college donated two college-owned houses to Habitat for Humanity, Canisius students, faculty and staff worked with Habitat to renovate the houses. The college’s School of Education and Human Services is actively engaged in the community with its partnerships with Buffalo City and

Catholic Schools. The programs include staff and parent training and direct service as student teachers. In the fall of 2015, Canisius became the second school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to form a partnership with ESPN, which allows Canisius to provide live sporting events directly to ESPN for video distribution on ESPN3 and ESPN+. The four, five and six camera productions feature Canisius students working on the production crew, holding various roles such as camera operators, graphics, replay and audio. Productions from Canisius’ campus are distributed through the school’s state-of-the-art control room, which is located in the College’s Science Hall building. Canisius is home to 20 NCAA Division I sports teams. The college’s men’s basketball program has been a source of pride for the school, and the program has seen a recent resurgence. Since 1903–04, the Griffs have appeared in four NCAA Tournament, five NIT events, four CIT postseason tournaments and the CBI in 2018. In the last decade, the school’s women’s team has received its fair share of recognition as well, with the program earning an NCAA Tournament and a WNIT postseason bid. Canisius has also enjoyed recent success over its Western New York rival Niagara, as the Blue and Gold have claimed the Canal Cup Trophy in 10 of the last 12 years as part of the “Battle of the Bridge” series, an all-sport rivalry series between the two schools which are separated by just 20 miles.
