CONFERENCE COMMISSIONERS

Ted Gumbart, ASUN Commissioner Gumbart became the fourth full-time Commissioner of the ASUN Conference in January 2007. He began his service with the conference, then known as the Trans AmericaAthleticConference (TAAC), in1991as its first Assistant Commissioner. Hewas promoted to Associate Commissioner in 1997, and to Senior Associate Commissioner in 2004. Among his roles with ASUN, Gumbart has overseen the championships program and the addition of nine new sports to the ASUN lineup (women’s soccer, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, beach volleyball and football). He led the development of and remains President of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) which sponsors men’s and women’s swimming and diving and beach volleyball. He coordinated the development of the first ASUN syndicated television package, the first conference-wide digital broadcast network (ASUN.TV), and led the move to become the first collegiate conference with 100% campus-based ESPN production capabilities. During the spring of 2021

the ASUN established an NCAA record for most championship events (21) operated in one semester as all ASUN sports conducted championship play that spring. The ASUN has set and re-set records for most conference championship contests produced by host campus production teams and fed directly to ESPN live streaming platforms. Gumbart has served as President of the Collegiate Commissioners Association, represented the CCA on the Division I Council, and chaired multiple NCAA committees during his tenure. He has authored significant NCAA legislative items related to Division I conference membership and continues to be a strong proponent of maximizing every student-athlete’s opportunity to compete in conference and NCAA championship events. At the conclusion of the current academic year (June 30, 2023), Gumbart begins his retirement following a career with the ASUN that spanned 32 years and 8 months of service, the last 16 years and 6 months as commissioner.

Richard J. Ensor, Esq., MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor was named the third Commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in August 1988 and is currently the longest serving active NCAA Division I commissioner. Ensor has provided leadership in a period of conference realignment and growth in intercollegiate athletics and the MAAC. During his tenure the MAAC has secured a stable membership base, expanded the number of championships conducted and developed an extensive marketing program cemented with broadcast agreements with ESPN, a web paged hosted by SIDEARM Sports and secured championship venues such as the Jim Whalen Boardwalk Hall (Atlantic City, NJ), Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and Disney Sports Attractions. The MAAC remains a homogenous association of private institutions of similar size and funding, which are committed to student-athlete excellence both on the playing fields and in the classroom. The MAAC’s graduation rate is yearly in the top 25% of all leagues. Ensor is a past member of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and past president of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA). He serves on the boards of the Sports Lawyers Association (SLA),

the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, WBCA, Philadelphia Sports Congress, and NACDA’s IAAA ADs. Ensor was currently reelected Treasurer of the SLA and serves on the Executive Committee of the WBCA. He has served multiple terms on the NCAA DI Council where he served as chair of the Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee on which he will remain with a recent 4-year term renewal. He recently began a term on the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The MAAC Commissioner since 1988, Ensor’s tenure will conclude at the end of the 2022-23 season.
