PLAYER TO WATCH Sophomore forward Zaria Shazer has emerged as a leader for the young Red Foxes squad, leading the way in points scored and on the glass. Shazer was named MAAC Player of the Week on Nov. 15 after notching double-doubles in her first three games of the season. On Feb. 17, she was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for her great work on the court and in the classroom.

NOTABLE ALUMNI Julianne Viani-Braen is one of Marist’s

most celebrated women’s basketball players. Viani-Braen was a starter for the Red Foxes when they became the MAAC’s first women’s basketball team to reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007. She scored 1,447 points in her collegiate careers, and is one of the top three-point shooters in program history. Viani-Braen is now a sportscaster who has covered games on ESPN, CBS, Big Ten Network, Pac-12 Network, NBA NextVR, MSG, and YES. She was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll in the 2013–14 season.

PLAYER TO WATCH Sophomore guard Ricardo Wright has emerged into a leader on and off the floor for the Marist men’s basketball team, and has become of the top guards in the MAAC. Wright led the team in scoring in his freshman season and was named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team along with being named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times. Wright scored a career- high 29 points against VMI this season and has ranked among the MAAC's leaders in scoring all season long. NOTABLE ALUMNI Rik Smits ’88 played for the Marist men’s basketball team from 1984–88, and led the Red Foxes to the NCAA Tournament in 1986 and 1987. After totaling 1,945 points, 811 rebounds, and 345 blocked shots in his collegiate career, Smits went on to a distinguished 12-year NBA career. Smits was selected second overall in the 1988 Draft by the Indiana Pacers, and played his entire career with the organization. He appeared in the 1998 NBA All-Star Game and 2000 NBA Finals, finishing his career with 12,871 points, 5,277 rebounds, and 1,111 blocked shots.

HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNE John Dunne is in his fourth season as head coach at Marist. Dunne was hired as the 12 th head coach in program history on April 3, 2018. In the 2020–21 season, Dunne guided the Red Foxes to their first winning season in 13 years and was named a Skip Prosser Man of the Year finalist by CollegeInsider. com. On Jan. 8, 2020, Dunne became the fourth head coach in MAAC history to win 100 regular season conference games. In his first three seasons, Marist had its first MAAC Sixth Man of the Year, a Third Team All-MAAC selection, three MAAC All-Rookie Team choices, and 13 selections to the conference’s All-Academic Team. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Dunne served as head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2006–18. He guided the Peacocks to the 2011 MAAC championship and 2017 CIT championship. Dunne served as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee in the 2012–13 season, and was a member of the committee from 2010–13. He was a 2011 national finalist for the Skip Prosser Award.

HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGIS Brian Giorgis is in his 20 th season as head coach of Marist Women’s Basketball. During his time as the Red Foxes’ leader, Giorgis has won a conference-record 11 MAAC Championships and eight MAAC Coach of the Year awards. The 2020 recipient of the CollegeInsider.com Kay Yow National Coach of the Year honor, Giorgis followed up that season with a return to glory, capturing the program’s 11 th MAAC Championship. On Nov. 8, 2019, Giorgis won his 400 th game as Marist’s head coach, becoming what is believed to be the first head coach with 400 coaching wins at both the NCAA Division I level and high school level. In 2006–07, Giorgis led Marist to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first MAAC program, men’s or women’s, to achieve that feat. Outside of Marist, Giorgis won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2013 World University Games as an assistant coach. He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. On Feb. 17, 2022, Giorgis earned his 450 th victory with the Red Foxes in a win over Saint Peter’s.
